President Clinton weighs in on amendment during pre-election push

This is the final weekend before the May 8 primary, and those on both sides of the debate over a constitutional amendment defining marriage are gearing up for a final round of rallies and get out the vote efforts.

The anti-amendment Coalition to Protect All NC Families rolled out a robocall from former president Bill Clinton telling voters the amendment "will also take away health insurance from children and could even take away domestic violence protections from women."

Also this weekend, the New York Times' Nate Silver analyzed polls on the amendment and said the preponderance of evidence indicates it will pass.

"Still, it seems clear that groups that oppose the amendment will need many voters to make a late decision about the ballot initiative. One advantage they have is that groups that oppose the amendment have raised $2.3 million, versus $1.2 million for groups that support the amendment," Silver wrote.

Look for a story from today's amendment rallies on the news this evening.
