Embattled North Carolina Democratic Party Chairman David Parker said during a news conference that he would call for a new election for chairman shortly after May 8 election. Parker further said he wouldn't run.

While this isn't an immediate resignation, state and national Democrats are applauding the move, saying that Parker is appropriately acting on their calls for him to resign.

From Gov. Bev Perdue: “I am pleased that Mr. Parker has announced that he will step aside as party chairman. The party must move quickly to select a new chair and a new executive director. It's time to resume our focus on the core mission of the Democratic Party: strengthening our schools, creating jobs, and ensuring more opportunity for all North Carolinians.”

From DNC Executive Director Patrick Gaspard: "David Parker made the right decision to resign effective immediately following the next executive committee meeting of the NCDP. This is in the best interest of the Party. The NCDP should convene this meeting as soon as possible."

Update: I just spoke to N.C. Sec. of State Elaine Marshall by phone. "I'm pleased he's agreed to step aside," Marshall said. She added that the May 12 was really the earliest the Democrat's state executive committee could meet, given the notice requirements in the party's plan of organization.

Of course, Republicans had their own response. 

RNC Spokesman Matt Connelly: “Obama Superdelegate and NCDP Chairman David Parker’s press conference today has further exposed what a grave threat this sexual harassment scandal is to President Obama’s already bleak chances at winning North Carolina in November. President Obama will be forced to address this continuing scandal when he arrives in Raleigh on Tuesday and North Carolinians are eagerly awaiting his response.”
