Perdue steps up rhetoric against marriage amendment

Gov. Bev Perdue is stepping up her opposition to the marriage amendment question on the May 8 ballot.

This afternoon, she release a web video in which she lays out her reasons and urges people to vote against it.

"The amendment, I believe is dangerous for women," Perdue says in the video. "There is a real risk that some of the laws we have on the books now to protect the victims of domestic violence may no longer apply to many women in this state."

According to Perdue's office, she is scheduled to give a speech in Charlotte Friday at the 2012 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Women's Summit, during which she'll echo some of the themes in this video. 

When Perdue first announced her opposition to the marriage amendment in October, she did so by way of a news release and with little fanfare. It appears she's now ready to take a more high profile position.

Ha! I assume she used campaign cash to fund that video.... Specifics, Gov. How will the amendment affect domestic violence laws? Does she admit that she voted for discrimination in 1996?

Nobody needs to start legal proceedings against her. I am glad to see she is against this amendment! And really, how did she fund this video?? Um, Youtube is free. No funds needed!

How can Amendment One change the paternity of a child? I don't understand why Gov. Bev Perdue says children could loose their health care and prescription drug benefits. What is she talking about? And yes, Youtube is free, but I'm sure the professional video, the distribution of it, and the emails to promote it were prepared at the expense of the state. It obviously was not made in a private home.

She is like many other people -- they speak in BROAD, GENERAL TERMS, and no specifics. If she had to quote specific risks if the amendment passes, she would not be able to make some of her statement (which would probably be false).

She is using SCARE TACTICS to try to influence the vote, so she probably can say "During my term, I defeated the voting ID and prevented the Marriage amendment from being approved by the citizens of North Carolina".

Is she speaking as an individual or as the GOVERNOR? Makes a big difference in how her comments are received by the citizens!
