Conservative blogger posts Obama photo in chains with fried chicken

Published: 2012-03-22 01:04:00
Updated: 2012-03-22 14:56:29

A blogger for conservative NC think tank The John Locke Foundation is being asked to explain why she illustrated a story on President Obama's position on North Carolina's proposed marriage amendment with an altered image of Obama in chains and high heels with a bucket of fried chicken.

On Monday, "Meck Deck" blogger Tara Servatius posted a story stating that the president took a public position against the amendment to boost his chances of winning North Carolina in November. Accompanying the story was an image of the president’s face Photoshopped onto an African-American man wearing high heels and chains. Between the man's legs is a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Update: Servatius has since resigned.

The story didn’t come to our attention till Wednesday evening, when liberal-leaning bloggers began tweeting links to it. Within an hour, the photo was removed from the story, though at the time of this post, it was still available on the think tank’s servers.

After initially posted a photo of the image along with this blogpost, WRAL News decided to remove the image because many people found it offensive.

The photo elicited a statement from state NAACP President Rev. William Barber:

"We at the NC NAACP have learned of the disgusting picture of our President on the John Locke Foundation blog and website. What we have seen so far has both racist and homophobic overtones, both of which are contrary to the fundamentals of our democracy. It's outrageous and it shows the kind of racialized, mean-spirited and divisive political attitudes that still exist in the South.

"On Thursday we will demand to know who authorized and developed such a racist and bigoted portrayal to be placed on the site of an organization that seeks to have so much influence into the shaping of public policy in NC. Whoever did it is completely over the line. It is reckless and dangerous. And should not only be an affront to the black community, the civil rights community, the LBGT community, but every North Carolinian."

John Locke Foundation President John Hood expressed regret on Facebook Wednesday night, saying he had had the photo removed from the site because it was "extremely inappropriate" and irrelevant to the content of the story. He also said he would find out how the photo got posted in the first place, and would take “appropriate action.”

stupid is as stupid does.......go back to work people!

A house divided against itself cannot stand, Abraham Lincoln's speech included. People, this is what we have become, a nation divided, and I am afraid if we don't come together in some sort of unity, we are going to fall. NEVER, I think I would be reading such hate from both sides, but I am scared that by the time we realize that the dividing forces are winning, it will be too late!

This may be in poor taste but it is not illegal. Where is Barbers opinion of the US flags being sold with Obumas picture in place of the stars, which is an illegal act. Barber is as one sided as the people he speaks out aganist.

Not condoning what this girl did AT ALL. BUT... just for kicks... Google "Condoleeza Rice Racist Cartoons"... and then hit the "IMAGES" tab. Go ahead, try it.

@whatusay: Of course you don't see anything wrong with it because you are looking through the same prejudice/racist eyes as the writer!

I have to laugh when the left slings insults and call people names. Oh well, you can't erase history. We all know the history of the Democratic Party and their racist past. Keep on keepin the man down by convincing him he can't do any better for himself. The Democratic Party would vanish if their victim mentality, government dependecy, and race baiting methods didn't exist.

ccsmith1902.... look at the cartoon in depth. It portays Obama as most Americans see him. He will do anything for a vote.

It does not matter how educated, etc. Obama is, some people will never accept the fact he is mixed with black....and let's just be honest 99% of the ugly, hateful things said and written about President Obama and his family are done by conservative white people. Why some people are fueled by such hatred of others they perceive as different is disturbing. The post was meant to be ugly and not funny because quite frankly there is nothing funny about it. Having said all that racism will be here always and there is not a whole lot we can do about it, except educate ourselves and kids to not behave that way because racism is taught and accepted by many, no one is born racist!

As a conservative, this makes me extremely angry. This is nothing but someone putting their own desires before the larger group. She is attempting to capitalize on recent controversy created by others, and in doing so making conservatives look like racist bigots. She realizes that this will put her in a negative light, but when this breaks national news, even if vilified, people will know her name.

It's shameful. To the folks calling all conservatives racists - know that it isn't true. rjrumfelt March 22, 2012 10:42 a.m. Report abuse

Sucks huh? Ill play your "all" game. Its like calling all "liberals" lazy people waiting on a government check. Labels are for low IQ people. Its because they cannot hold multiple thoughts in their head and still retain the ability to think. They are programmed sheep and taught to vote by a letter after their name.

Not all Republicans share these hateful attitudes. Just the base.

dukefan087.... Harvard Law School graduates is what's wrong with this country....too many of them and they almost always are left wing liberals who only believe in welfare and higher taxes on working Americans to pay for the welfare.....for votes of course.

What's racist about this picture???? I don't see anything wrong with it. It's just satire portaying the many facets of Obama and his style of campaigning.

"The left has made fun of Palins kid who has down syndrome"

i eagerly await your examples of this.

"guess Tom Hanks showing up at a fundraiser with a blacken face does not warrant media coverage"

LOL..at least know the facts...Hanks was not in blacken face. He had no knowledge it was going to happen.

Again, when folks aren't decent enough to acknowledge that something is wrong, but instead rely on "the other guys do it, too", they are part of the problem.

Us poor white people! We have been treated sooooo unfairly! Of course, it means the same thing when a person from another race is mean to us. We have been victimized for soooooo long. Seriously?

I say keep the prejudice out in the open racists/homophobes. It will only incite fair-minded people to get out and vote against prejudice in the NC constitution. Say NO to Amendment One and any politician, Republican or Democrat, supporting it.

"Where was the outrage of all those crazy pics of W? How about when those afgans burn a effigy of obama? "

the simply ignorant response whenever something happens to Obama.... Sad, but not unpredictable.

whatyousay: It is sad that you find the cartoon of Obama on target. Attitudes like yours are what is going terribly wrong in this country. No respect, no class.

"We're trying to progress as a nation and this woman just took us back to the 1950's."

This woman apparently has an awful lot of power. rocket

Among uneducated, backward, hayseed racists who agree with her.....yes she does. Man, talk about sheeple.

Alphonse: The left has not made fun of Palin's child - they are talking about her shortcomings as a mother.

"RockGuitar... have you ever heard of the NAACP, or the Black Panthers??? I find this cartoon "on target" with the actions of Obama. Everthing pictured in the cartoon identifies Obama and his campaign rhetoric. whatusay"

Wow, how ignorant.

"And locals (me included) wonder why the rest of the country think we are shoeless, overall wearing, backward ya-hoos."

The NC GOP certainly seem to want to project that image of us.....

"Update: Servatius has since resigned."

Good. Fired would have been even better........

"There are a lot of yahoos working for John Lock, but Hood isn't one of them."

I agree. "Sock puppet" is more accurate.

I guess some people just don't have a sense of humor. Click to view my profile Rebelyell55

I guess some people aren't racist bigots.

You may not like Obama or vote for him come November but the man is highly intelligent. He went to Harvard Law School and taught law at the University of Chicago.

"SUUUURRRRRRRREEEEEEE he will! Bet he knows exactly how that photo got posted, who did it and everything about it."

He didn't say what an "appropriate action" was. In this case I imagine it might be a high five.

While I don't agree with a lot of John Hoods politics, he acted quickly to get rid of this nonsense. He pulled the picture and fired the blogger who put it up. There are a lot of yahoos working for John Lock, but Hood isn't one of them.

"We're trying to progress as a nation and this woman just took us back to the 1950's."

This woman apparently has an awful lot of power.

Wow. Many of the posts here illiterate in no uncertain terms the bigotry of of conservatives in the US today. Defending the actions of the racist blogger is every bit as vile as the posting of the racist trash.

Attitudes that used to be limited to the right wing lunatic fringe now seem to be mainstream.

I'm a republican and didn't vote for Obama.

I also don't condone this type of racism. Just poor form.

And locals (me included) wonder why the rest of the country think we are shoeless, overall wearing, backward ya-hoos.

It's just satire. The left has made fun of Palins kid who has down syndrome. Get over it and move on. Bunch of babies.

If this was a picture of Newt Gingrich or George Bush, showing a pot belly with no teeth, wearing a NASCAR t-shirt no one would have a problem with it, and the left would consider it brillant satire. Tarheel True

.....and it would still be racist and bigoted.

RockGuitar... have you ever heard of the NAACP, or the Black Panthers??? I find this cartoon "on target" with the actions of Obama. Everthing pictured in the cartoon identifies Obama and his campaign rhetoric.

Not advocating stupidity, but if you're going to cover a story atleast be consistent. sillywabbitthepatriot

Except you are advocating stupidity. Your stupidity and your racism and bigotry.

"So what? No worse than how magazines photoshopped Sarah Palin."

I'm betting you love the idea that your 1st Amendment rights are protected by depicting racism, hate and bigotry and allows you the comfort to post things like this without legal repercussions.

Yet, you'll criticize the ACLU for protecting those rights for you.

Hypocrite.

So what? This was done by an individual who represents only that individual. Apology was made. Move on. Obama took a huge donation from Bill Maher who has made more vile statements than this. No apologies in that case. Stop with the double standard. And some people wonder where the media bias is.

Well you know what a racist truly is in 2012, that is a conservative who is winning an arguement with a liberal.

The true racism that exists today, is embedded in the black community. They wear their victim patch proudly, and thou shalt not criticize.

If this was a picture of Newt Gingrich or George Bush, showing a pot belly with no teeth, wearing a NASCAR t-shirt no one would have a problem with it, and the left would consider it brillant satire.

DOUBLE STANDARDS!

Also, LOL @ "Follow-the-Money," he is spot on:)

We're trying to progress as a nation and this woman just took us back to the 1950's. This is sophmoric and juvenile Jim Crow posters. What a racist bigot.

So what? No worse than how magazines photoshopped Sarah Palin.

Keep racism alive WRAL.

Republicans are bigots and their ranks are filled with racists and closet Klansmen. Membership in right-wing militia-style groups and white supremacists is on the rise ever since we the people elected Barack Hussein Obama. This tasteless cartoon from right-wing-dingers is not surprising. Obama / Biden 2012

I love the fried chicken stereotype. Ever been to a Bojangles in the morning? Its like a rest home for white people.

So what's new? Racist right wingers are a dime a dozen these days. Just read the stuff that they freely post here. geosol March 22, 2012 8:31 a.m. Report abuse

I saw a bumper sticker that said "Dont Re-Nig in 2012". Not sure why those baggers are called racist. I just cant figure it out. Maybe they just cant spell "renege".

I used to be proud to be from NC.

Pretty tame considering how lefty liberals slam conservatives. No moral high ground for either..... guess Tom Hanks showing up at a fundraiser with a blacken face does not warrant media coverage.... but let a conservative push the limits and watch the media frenzy. Double standards show up well. mep

A clueless comment. Did you read the article? It wasn't the republicans who got slammed; it was the President of the United States.

Regardless of party affiliation, this was in very poor taste.

"He also said he would find out how the photo got posted in the first place, and would take “appropriate action.”"

SUUUURRRRRRRREEEEEEE he will! Bet he knows exactly how that photo got posted, who did it and everything about it.

I'm a native of this area. I'm also ashamed to be a native of this area. I give a lot back to my community and sometimes have to wonder why when we live among racist bigots.

ncgayatheist you said it correctly......she made us look like ignorant racist hicks. I'm sure glad this female blogger likes being led around by a white male instead of making her own decisions. Because that's what is coming from any of the GOP candidates.

So what's new? Racist right wingers are a dime a dozen these days. Just read the stuff that they freely post here.

Tired of all this fake outrage only when a republican does something. Did obama call sarah palins daughter yet for all the bill maher has called her? Bet not casp3r

Nope. The right wingnuts are still alienating women from the fatboy rush comments.

Lose the chains and I could believe he dresses like that to relax. And who don't like chicken? Get over it crybabies.
