Wake County Sen. Dan Blue said Tuesday that he plans to seek re-election this fall and won't pursue the Democratic nomination for governor.

“I am greatly moved by and want to thank the hundreds of people who called, emailed and talked to me about mounting a (gubernatorial) campaign. I am forever grateful," Blue said in a statement. "Whoever wins the nomination is going to need a strong General Assembly to help translate his ideas into effective policy, and I pledge to be a fearless advocate in the Senate to help our Democratic governor get and keep our state on the right track.”

Blue, who served as House speaker from 1991 to 1995, has served in the Senate since 2009.

Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton, Orange County Rep. Bill Faison and former 2nd District Congressman Bob Etheridge are seeking the Democratic nomination for governor.

Filing for candidates closes Wednesday.
