Stevens won't seek another Senate term

Sen. Richard Stevens said Friday that he won't run for re-election this fall.

The Wake County Republican has served in the Senate for 10 years. He previously was county manager.

"It is time for a new chapter in my life and for someone else to take on the responsibility of representing the 17th District," Stevens said in a letter to supporters. "The General Assembly will need to continue to work to provide an environment in which new jobs can be created and young people can be provided an opportunity for a quality education.

"From my time in the General Assembly, some of my fondest memories will be of when individuals of both parties reached across the aisle and found ways to move this state forward," he said. "The greatness of North Carolina comes from our diversity and I hope that all who serve will put aside their differences as often as possible in service for the good of all."

Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger praised Stevens for his management and budgetary skills.

"For a decade, he brought a no-nonsense approach to state government – working across the aisle to balance our budget, streamlining state government and advocating for higher education," Berger, R-Rockingham, said in a statement.
