The Democrats' list of potential gubernatorial candidates keeps getting shorter. Congressman Heath Shuler now says he won't run.
Shuler posted a statement on his congressional website this afternoon: “I will not be running for governor of North Carolina in 2012. It is an honor to even be discussed as a potential candidate for such an esteemed office, but now is not my time.”
The 11th district Democrat is expected to face a tough re-election fight this fall. His district was redrawn by Republican lawmakers to exclude his Democratic supporters in Asheville.
