Chris Carney, a small-business owner who served more than five years on the Town of Mooresville’s Board of Commissioners, was sworn in Tuesday night as District 41 senator, succeeding the late Sen. Jim Forrester.

Forrester died in October after serving more than two decades in the North Carolina Senate.

Carney, 40, is a Hickory native who most recently served as mayor pro tem of Mooresville.

“I understand the struggles our citizens and small-business owners are facing in this economy, and I’m ready to make the tough choices necessary to get people back to work and make our state a better place to live and do business,” he said in a statement.
