PED Report: No accounting for motor fleet

A new report issued Wednesday by the legislature's Program Evaluation Division says NC has no way of tracking how many vehicles it owns, where they are, or what they're costing NC taxpayers.

The report, available here, says NC state agencies and institutions report owning about 29,000 vehicles. But DMV records show the same agencies have registered more than 31,000 permanent license plates for state-owned vehicles. So where are the extra 2,345 plates? And why aren't NC state agencies tracking what vehicles they own and how much they cost to maintain?

    Rick and Donna on WPTF were talking about this earlier this week. Hummm. Interesting!! R&D found that the state had 2300+ more active plates than cars-insurance too or is the state self insured??

    Sounds like some dept heads don't know what they've got!! Is this surprising??
