Former Perdue fundraiser Peter Reichard wouldn't grant interviews after entering an Alford plea today to a felony charge. But his lawyer, Hart Miles, sent out the following statement from him:
"Today we acknowledged that I helped Mike Fulenwider pay Juleigh Sitton. That was never in dispute. What was in dispute was how those transactions should be interpreted under North Carolina law.
"In the end, putting my family through a long, expensive and public court battle was simply not feasible. I have spent most of my adult life working hard to serve my community and the State of North Carolina. I acknowledge that I have made some mistakes along the way and today pay the price.
"My story is not over. I will move forward in a positive way, focusing all of my energy on being the best husband, father and businessman I can be."
Reichard was fined $25,000 and sentenced to two years' probation in a plea deal with state prosecutors.
