Bar seeks discipline for Easley

The North Carolina State Bar has filed a formal complaint against former Democratic Gov. Mike Easley, seeking disciplinary action for his conviction for campaign fraud.

Easley entered an Alford plea to one felony count of certifying a false campaign finance report in November 2010. In an Alford plea, a defendant pleads guilty, while maintaining his innocence, and admits it is in his best interest to take the plea deal because there is sufficient evidence to find him guilty.

According to the complaint, Easley's crime demonstrates professional unfitness, and the "conviction of a criminal offense showing professional unfitness is grounds for imposition of professional discipline."

Easley's license was suspended last December, pending the conclusion of formal disciplinary proceedings. This appears to be the beginning of those proceedings.

Katherine Jean, the attorney representing the State Bar in the proceeding, says it's not unusual for formal disciplinary proceedings to take some time to get underway.

"It requires a thorough investigation," Jean explained. "That would be the case in any case with a criminal component, and the evidence to be reviewed can be voluminous."

She couldn't say what disciplinary action the State Bar is seeking.

"It could go all the way from dismissal to disbarment," she said. Other actions the board could take include reprimand, censure and suspension.

Jean says the next step is for the chairwoman of the Disciplinary Hearing Committee to appoint a panel to hear the complaint. Once the panel is named, a hearing date will be set. Jean says it's typically about four months from the time a complaint is filed till the first hearing date.

This state loves electing corrupt democrats like Jim Black, Mike Easley, Bev Perdue. Lets hope this hasn't been the case for 100 years and its finally coming to light. Just 1 more reminder this state needs a new direction. We already have some of the highest taxes in the South, lets try to be like our neighbors for a change. I still have people telling me how they always fill up in SC, VA, GA or TENN before re-entering NC, that's not a good reputation to have. We are the NY or California of the southeast, i'd like to see us shake that label.

Good news! Except that he should go to jail! He was a disgrace to the office and to the State. He ran on a sleazy deal that he cut with Smithfield Foods to protect them from lawsuits, in return for a LOT of money that ran a 10 year test that was mandated to be conducted by NCState to find better hog waste systems. The process was set up to fail from the start, despite the heroic efforts by NCState personnel (not to be named) to make it work. I hope that he can never function as an attorney again!

Disbar him! He got away without serving any time, let his cronies due the time.

One other thing about Easley. Dont he look kinda like the Grinch, and Bev. like the Joker? Seems to me.

Dang arfamr1007 that's justplain ole mean. I dont mind you yanks sharing our land. I even like some of you. My mama told me, "if you cant say somethin nice, then dont say nothin at all".

this guy is proof that southerners are as dumb as the stereotypes...and then to elect Bev on top of that?!?!! LOL at stereotypical southerners!!!

Bev Perdue won't let anything happen to her buddy...count on that.

What's new? Another Democrat, that thought he could get away with a crime. Plain and simple. Guilty, disbarment, is the only way to go. Bev, you may be next in line.

HE SHOULD BE DISBARRED AT A MINIMUM. AN ATTORNEY ABOVE ALL KNOWS WHAT IS LEGAL, EVEN IF HE DOES NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT IS ETHICAL.

A shame this guy is not in prison where he deserves to be living.

Doctor Dataclerk said: "I could kill a squirrel out of season and it would be more than that."

Yea, LOL, but you could file an "Alford plea" and get away a slap on the wrist.

According to the article: "In an Alford plea, a defendant pleads guilty, while maintaining his innocence, and admits it is in his best interest to take the plea deal because there is sufficient evidence to find him guilty."

I've never heard of this one before. rolleyes

I see another slap on the wrist coming here. He only paid $1k fine for his misdeeds, so will they really police their own, a past governor no less?

I won't be expecting a serious action here.

Bev is hoping democrats will vote a "straight" ticket again, and Obama wins....that means she will win again.

This state bar complaint is the equivalent to a seat belt ticket. If his campaign fraud charges only netted a $1,000 fine then he can probably resolve this with the members of the state bar by letting them use his beach house. What a joke.

What? A criminal can't practice law in NC?

ooooooooooooohhh!!

"Let them eat cheeseburgers!"

LOL!!!

Uh oh. This could be trouble. The state Bar's reputation for discipline is fearsome. Mr Easley, ESQ might be told he has to sign his name with a mere Bic pen instead of the $300 Mont Blanc he's accustomed to using. Or they might make him wear an off the rack suit. Or, even more fearsome, make him ride in a Hyundai and not a BMW or Benz...

*rolls eyes at the state Bar*

seeking disciplinary action for his conviction for campaign fraud.

He was wrong and surely he should be punished by the courts of law. He is not above any law and he knew what he was doing was wrong. So send him to prison for a few years. May others learn from this.

I said it before they sentenced him, and now I will say it again. He will keep his license after 90 days suspension.

As crooked as a POLITICIAN!!! Good grief, there really is truth to that saying LOL

Can a convicted felony be a lawyer? I know they good until caught.

I don't think it takes 12 months to investigate this matter. Smells like a rotten deal has been worked out to allow him to keep his law license.

Nothing is what they are going to do, because they had plenty of evidence against him where he squeezed everyone from developers to NC State and they did nothing. A $1,000 fine, give me a break. I could kill a squirrel out of season and it would be more than that. Bev and John Edwards will go scott free as well.

Pay attention Bev you are next. They should start with your land deals and move from there!!!!

He should be in jail right now.

"Is he a Democrat,it didn`t in the article? "

They don't draw attention to that when it's one of their own.

A crooked Democrat? Tell me it ain't so.

day late and a dollar short...nothing more than a slap on the wrist. The ones that are filing the complaint are as crooked as he is

I have no NO patience with people like Easley who basically say "trust me" to do what is best for you and the State (or country) in which you live... then do some of the things he did. Absolutely NO patience with that!!! Permanent PERMANENT disbarment is what he and all of his ilk deserve!!!

Let them eat cheeseburgers!

Is he a Democrat,it didn`t in the article? Wral is he a Democrat or Republican?

Cut him a deal.

If he turns on Bev!

Former Illinois Gov. just got sentenced to 14 years in prison..ours gets a slap on the wrist with a wet noodle and then gets his cohort elected...North Carolina has to wake up..

Is the State Bar Association is tax payer funded?

Don't see how the NC Bar could have done otherwise. The question is whether this will ultimately turn into a "take-it-easy-on-Easley" dog and pony show.

Is Bev Perdue going to get the same disciplinary slap on the wrist too??who say's crime dont pay..

What a joke. Hold out your hand Mike, we gotta slap it one last time.

They should have disbarred him when he took the deal now we spend even more taxpayer money on him When do we stop supporting the Easlys for thumbing their noses at the law

Although he has a law degree and is a member of the NC Bar (perhaps soon to change), was regarded as a "pretty good" District Attorney, became Governor of NC... from what I recall of his "Governor days" - he "thumbed his nose" at some laws, and likely "bent significantly" and, at minimum, significantly violated the "spirit" of other laws. Disbarment is what he deserves... PERMANENT disbarment!

Why is Easley not in prison?

Disbarment is the only way to go. He's a disgrace to NORTH CAROLINA.Just part of the "Good ole Boys Club in NC. Scratch my back,I'll scratch yours,Bev.

Why don't they just say that he violated the oath he took when he was sworn in? I know many lawyers do this also, and some actually get caught, but the they have very little punishment and are reinstated later. (Johnson Co. just recently). When the profession police itself, there will be little or no action unless the lawyer just really commits a serious crime. Laws, by lawyers, mean to be only for the average person I guess. Wonder if the lawyers lead to fall of Rome?

Wasting tax dollars seem to be a big deal with the state, give the money to people who need it instead of beating a dead horse again ,This wasting money on slaping him or kicking him ,whatever you want to it wasteful. He's been cooked already

Who's next?

Time to completely take away Easley's law license!
