Tedesco eyeing DPI?

Wake County Board of Education member John Tedesco isn't ruling out a 2012 run for state schools superintendent.

Rumors have been circulating for some time that Tedesco will run for the GOP nomination for DPI chief.  

Reached by email Thursday, he would neither confirm nor deny those rumors. 

"While there are several opportunities for me to consider right now, at this time, my focus is my coming wedding, continued service to the children of Wake County and sharing the holidays with family and friends. In the beginning of the new year, I will evaluate further," Tedesco wrote.

The Department of Public Instruction race is shaping up to be one of 2012's most crowded contests. If Tedesco runs, he'll face primary opposition from Cary teacher Ray Martin and former Monroe City Council candidate Richard Alexander, who've already declared their candidacy.

On the Democratic side, incumbent Superintendent June Atkinson has not yet said whether she'll run for a third term. If she doesn't, Rep. Rick Glazier, D-Cumberland, has said that he may run. Glazier is "double-bunked" with fellow Democratic Rep. Diane Parfitt in the new House redistricting map.
