I thought the deep fried candy bars were way out there when I first saw them five years ago or so. I had no clue. State fairs all over the country are deep frying EVERYTHING. I did a little poking around and was amazed at what I found.
Remember when I recently mentioned Deep Fried Jelly Bellys? you can buy them at the Texas State Fair. The article describes them as "fluffy balls of funnel cake batter hiding a scoop of Jelly Bellys." I think I'm horrified. Read this article for other mini-reviews of new Fair foods. I never thought I'd see the words "fried" and "truffles" in close proximity to each other.
The State Fair of Texas also features the iPie, a fried apple pie served on vanilla ice cream and with an edible color overlay designed to look like an iPod. There's a writeup and a picture here. It also comes with free souvenir earbuds. No word if the vanilla ice cream is DRM-free.
The State Fair of Oklahoma is offering fried pears (fried PEARS?) as well as manicotti on a stick. I look forward to the Science Channel's new special, "Structural Engineering Marvels of the 21st Century: Manicotti on a Stick."
Far and away the grossest Fair food I've heard about this year has been "roadkill," brought to you by the State Fair of Oregon. Roadkill is an elephant ear shaped like a runover rat or possum, leaking berry sauce. Ugh.
Let me think about happier Fair foods, like sausages and original ham biscuits. Do you have a favorite Fair food?
