Haunting for a Good Cause

Two haunted houses will keep the fun and frights going after the Fair.

Posted Updated

I don't want you to stop thinking about the Fair. There's still a few days left, plenty of time to have fun! But once the fair has moved on, you may be thinking about other ways you could have some fun. How about getting a good scare -- for a good cause? I can tell you about not one but TWO haunted houses. And I heard all about them at the Fair.

The first one is brought to you by the Raleigh Jaycees, they of the Turkey Shoot mentioned a couple of blog posts ago. From today through Halloween 111 Seaboard Avenue in Raleigh will be the site of Outbreak at Possum Creek. For $10 you can get a good fright for a good cause -- the money raised by the haunted house goes to a variety of local charities. For more information on the house and a coupon for $1 off admission, check out http://hauntedhouse.raleighjaycees.org/ .

The Raleigh Jaycees have had a local haunted house for many years now. But there's an upstart on the horizon which is putting on its second haunted house this year. The 4-H Interact Club at Fuquay-Varina High School is offering its own haunted house October 26, 27, 30, and 31st. Asylum 307, at 307 Broad Street Fuquay Varina will be serving up the scares for $7 at the door and $5 in advance. Like the Raleigh Jaycees', this house too is for a good cause -- the house supports the Making Magic Alliance (supporting at-risk children and families in Wake County) and Children in the Son, which supports Romanian children in distress.

Thomas Ray of 4-H Youth Development told me about it. "There are about 45 people in the club, but 80 to 100 people are involved in this haunted house." That's parents, non-members from the high school, and community members.

Though only in its second year, Thomas will put his club's haunted house against anybody's. "We have had a lot of people working on this, a lot of great ideas." Asylum 307 concerns serum 307, which has been injected into the patient -- and staff -- of Asylum 307. Mayhem ensues. "Come visit us," said Thomas. "I promise, you WILL be scared
