It's Money, Honey!

Posted Updated

What a concept: go to the Fair and actually GET some money instead of spending money.

But it's possible! Over by the grandstand there's the NC Cash Booth. There you can search to see if you have any money held by the Department of the State Treasurer. There's over $500 million in the unclaimed property search in over 1.3 million unclaimed items.

If you're not headed to the Fair, no worries! You can do a search at NCCash.com. You can search by last name, business name, or even search by city name with no personal/business name at all. If you find a match, you'll get a form to fill out. You'll have to send that form with supporting documentation to the state, and from there should expect to get your money within two months.

Let me tell you a couple more useful things you might want to know. First NCCash offers an alert service on its Web site. Here you can enter your name and some other information. Once a month NCCash will check its database against your information and send you an e-mail if there's a match. Very cool!

Second is that our state's unclaimed property system is not the only one. The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators has a Web site that allows you to do either a state-by-state search of unclaimed property databases all over the country, or search the unclaimed property database of 35 states (including North Carolina) on one site!

Who knows? You may find enough money to buy a candy apple AND a turkey leg.
