There's only so much sugar I can stand, so the latest taste test is for something that isn't at all sweet -- deep fried pickles.

You can get deep fried pickles various places around the Fair; I got mine at Woody's, the place that sells buffalo shrimp near Dorton Arena. (Look for the sign that says, "We Buffalo Anything".) I thought the pickles would be served as slices, but no, they're batter-dipped wedges served rather inexplicably with ranch dressing.

I skipped the dressing and tried them plain. It's so odd, getting foods that are normally served cold and having them hot. Hot pickles are actually pretty good. And the batter got pickle-ish from the brine, but not soggy. There wasn't too much batter, either -- mostly pickle.

Definitely a thumbs-up assuming you like pickles to start with. If you're looking for a respite from all the sugary stuff at the Fair, try a deep-fried pickle.
