The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina said Monday that 237,128 pounds of canned goods were raised during the annual Hunger Relief Day at the State Fair.

The amount fell below the record 247,569 pounds raised during the 2010 "can day" at the fair, officials said, but it was still enough to provide almost 200,000 meals to needy area families.

Crews picked up an extra 2,258 pounds of food by checking the gates to the fairgrounds on Monday for any canned goods left by fairgoers after Thursday's can day drive, officials said.
