Taste Test: Lemon Stick

Lemon Stick

In a first for this blog, I have to admit: I did not operate the food correctly.

Lemon sticks are lemons with the top cut off and a peppermint stick stuck in them. When I saw a picture of them, I thought, "Oh, so the sticks are hollow and you suck out the lemon juice. That works." And then I got one (on restaurant row, $2) and the stick wasn't hollow.

So I thought, "Okay, well, maybe you let the stick steep for a few minutes and you kind of dip it in the lemon." So I let it sit for a few minutes and then tried to pull the stick out. It broke. I tried to pull out the rest of the stick.

That broke.

So I left the rest of the stick in there and squeezed on the lemon, which left me with minty lemon juice, which was interesting but not particularly appetizing. Eventually I got frustrated and discarded the rest of it and drank a bottle of water.

And came home thinking, "There's no way I ate that correctly, or else it would be the most pointless Fair food ever." So I looked it up on the Web.

Apparently my problem is that I'm not from Baltimore. According to this post from Jillian's Kitchen, lemon sticks are a famous Baltimore food. And I was right the first time; you leave the stick in the lemon and suck on it, and the lemon juice is drawn up through the stick, and it is pleasant.

So I'll have to mark this one down to "did it wrong," and try it again before the end of the Fair if the chance presents itself.
