Fayetteville man sentenced for bringing guns to Kosovo

print friendly

A Kosovo native living in Fayetteville has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for trying to bring firearms with him on two trips to his homeland.

U.S. Attorney Thomas Walker said Thursday that Ramadan Rama, 40, will also pay a $4,000 fine.

Prosecutors said Rama tried to smuggle pistols with him on two trips to visit his family last year. The weapons were disassembled and wrapped in aluminum foil or hidden in a bid to elude detection.

Both times he got the guns past security at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, but the weapons were caught during baggage checks at airports in Kosovo and Austria, prosecutors said.

Court documents stated that Rama brought the weapons to protect family members who had been victims of violence in the former Yugoslavian territory, which experienced a civil war in the 1990s.

There should be nothing wrong with taking guns out of country.

Hmmmm. A couple of things wrong here. US Airport security didn't catch the guns in the baggage? How exactly did that happen with so much tax payer money being thrown at airport security?

Also, he was only fined $4,000. How much did it cost to hold him till trial and then try him? His fine should at least cover those costs. Oh, wait. That would involve using common sense and proper business sense.

Both times he got the guns got past security at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Huh?

If he was taking them to another country, why are we charging him?? If the other country don't like it, let them charge him..

Gooseye--Great Post, best I have seen yet. Thanks !!
