Attorney General Roy Cooper warned Monday that some residents of North Carolina have reported getting calls threatening jail time if they don't pay a debt.

The callers identify themselves as representatives of the "Federal State Bureau of NC," an agency which does not exist.

Cooper says legitimate debt collection agencies will provide a written request for payment and are not allowed to use threats. Anyone who receives a suspicious call is asked to report it by calling 1-877-566-7226.
