Arrested deputy is NFL star's dad

print friendly

A Nash County deputy and father of a North Carolina football star lost his job Thursday after he was arrested on drug charges.

George Thomas Kurney, 50, of N.C. Highway 581 in Bailey, is the father of Julius Peppers, who starred on the basketball and football teams at the University of North Carolina before going pro with the Carolina Panthers.

He was arrested Wedesday along with Donald Earl Bullock, 46, of Sims School Road in Sims, on charges of possession of cocaine.

The Nash County Sheriff's Office, Tarboro and Wilson police departments and the State Bureau of Investigation collaborated on the investigation. Both men were being held Thursday in the Wilson County Jail.

In all fairness to WRAL don't you think the sports media is going to report this too? Here is a link to Sports Illustrated article on the same story.

Praying for his family.

Btw, this is newsworthy. A LEO losing his job over drug stuff? Corrupt cop. Sure it's newsworthy, and since Peppers is very well known, that is also newsworthy. No one associated Peppers with the crime(s) that were committed.

"And TBK, haha, I'm glad to see you keep up the lunacy outside of the Sports threads."

Haha! Yep, I wander over here once in a while!

"It was the same when Gavin Grant got arrested for robbing people and a bunch of State fans were up in arms that the article mentioned he played basketball at NCSU."

That's the thing, and my only problem with this story. The title doesn't mention Carolina, but stories like the one you mentioned, do. When an ex-State player does something, his name, and NCSU are up in lights for all the world to see. When a Carolina player does something, we often just see wording like we did here, simply referring to him as an "NFL star".

For all we know, this was Joe Montana. It's not until we open the story that we see Peppers' name mentioned and/or any affiliation with Carolina.

We just want some consistency. Because it sure appears that this title was intentionally withholding any relationship with Carolina. Whatever standard WRAL adopts, I just want it applied CONSISTENTLY. Instead, we just see little things here and there that benefit Carolina in some way. We're just tied of the bias.
