A 15-year veteran of the Durham Police Department is facing sexual assault and kidnapping charges for crimes that allegedly occurred while he was on duty.

Sgt. Lester Rhodes, 42, was arrested Friday afternoon after an internal investigation into a complaint lodged on April 3, Durham police said.

According to an arrest warrant, Rhodes is accused of kidnapping a Hispanic man, taking him somewhere against his will and sexually assaulting him on April 3.

Rhodes was charged with first-degree sexual offense and first-degree kidnapping. He was placed in the Durham County jail and given a $1.2 million bond. His first court appearance was set for Monday.

Rhodes, who joined the Durham Police Department in February 1996 and works in the Patrol Bureau, has been placed on paid administrative leave, a police department spokeswoman said.
