PINETOPS, N.C. — A wreck in Edgecombe County around midnight Wednesday left a 21-year-old dead and two others in critical condition, state troopers said.

Troopers said David Corbet, 26, of Pinetops, was speeding along N.C. Highway 111 from Pinetops to Tarboro when a Chevrolet Impala pulled out from a driveway. Corbet saw the Impala and tried to swerve but still t-boned it.

Kendrick Diggins, 21, of Pinetops, who was driving the Impala, died at the hospital.

Two passengers in the Impala – Quarterius Draughn, 19, of Tarboro, and Prince Taylor, 20, of Pinetops – were in critical condition at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Corbet, his passenger, Leon Arcila, 25, of Greenville, and a third Impala passenger, Teyon Belcher, 23, of Pinetops, were taken to Heritage Hospital in Tarboro. An update on their conditions was not available.

Corbet told troopers said that Arcila was having health problems, and he was taking him to the hospital in Tarboro. Corbet was not wearing a seat belt.

Troopers said that all the people in the Impala had been drinking, and none of them were wearing their seat belts.

Troopers said they will consult with the Edgecombe County District Attorney about possible charges.
