A 16-year-old fired a shot at a Rocky Mount officer during a late Thursday chase, police said Friday.

The unidentified officer stopped a Cadillac on Russell Street near Paul Street for a traffic violation at about 10:45 p.m. when a passenger jumped from the car and fled on foot, police said.

The officer pursued the man on foot, and the man fired one shot from a handgun at the officer, police said. The bullet hit 816 Paul St., but neither the officer nor anyone inside the house was wounded.

The officer apprehended the man and seized the gun, along with a small amount of marijuana, police said. Investigators determined that the gun had been stolen.

Vernon Jeffrey Romain was charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, possession of a stolen firearm, discharging a firearm in the city limits, shooting into an occupied dwelling, possession of marijuana and resisting a public officer. He was being held in the Nash County jail under a $1.5 million bond.

what a shame

Cynic, you are really on the money on this one. What planet do you live on?

"Parents have not taught him, so maybe the prison system can and will."

The only thing the prison system will teach him is to be a better criminal, how to game the system. The officer should have nipped the criminal's career in the bud.

jesmyopenion/ You are so right. Cities would still be burning and there wouldn't be a 42inch LG television or a set of 22inch chrome rims for sale anywhere

Let's see, 16 years old, guess he had nothing better to do Thursday night. I'm suprised that I'm not reading that this kid was "just released from prison" for prior convictions of theft, drugs and attempted murder!! Oh that's right, he's just starting out on his criminal career so guess we get to read about him in the near future again huh?!!
