A portion of Cary Parkway was closed briefly after two pedestrians were hit by a car, police said Thursday.

Town officials said a vehicle broke down near the intersection of Southwest Cary Parkway and Towne Village Road, and the two people inside got out to look under the hood. Their vehicle was then rear-ended, causing the car to roll over the two people.

The pedestrians, identified as Cassandra Miller, 18, and Steven Tandy, 18, both of Cary, were taken to WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh for treatment of mild to moderate head injuries. They were treated and released.

The driver of the second vehicle, Brian Parks, 22, of Cary, was not injured.

Police said charges are pending.

Not saying it would have helped or that this is the case in this story, but from what I see of cars that are pulled to the side of a road or broken down in the middle of a road, I'd say about 95% don't have their flashers/hazards on. Not only does it make them less visible, it also creates a situation where I don't know what they are doing as I drive by. I do drive by cautiously, but I don't know if the car is abandoned or if they are pulling back on the road or really broken down or stopped for an animal crossing the road?!?! This is one of my biggest pet peeves, but I do hope everybody recovers and that the driver that rear ended the car is charged.

Nancy - "They were not "pedestrians", they were under the hood of their broken down Scion -"

Were they in the car behind the wheel? No. Were they on the pavement? Yes. If they were standing still in the crosswalk or standing still in front of a car would it be any different?

DeathRow-IFeelYourPain-NOT - From the Cooper case and the murder at the bank it is clear that the Cary police are not the best that money can buy.

And the word is 'kudos' not 'cudos'.

I drive that road every day and flashers or not there are stop lights about every block in that section of Cary Parkway therefore the driver who hit the broken down car was most likely not 100% paying attention. That part of Cary is always busy, there are always cars lined up at the stop lights no matter what time of day it is. Yes, it is always best to pull off of the road but sometimes when you are broken down you do not have that option right away.

somebody probably yacking on the cell phone with one hand and driving with the other.
