Charge: Goldsboro correctional officer's death was murder

Edward Ashley Pounds' death was initially believed to have stemmed from natural causes. A further investigation by the Medical Examiners Office in Greenville found his January 2010 illness and death stemmed from an altercation two months earlier with an inmate at Neuse Correctional Institution, where Pounds worked.

The inmate, Chardan Whitehead, was arrested Feb. 17 and charged with murder.

Whitehead spent most of the 14 months since his fight with Pounds in custody. He was released from the Edgecombe County Jail on Feb. 12. Just five days later, he returned to the jail before his transfer to the Wayne County Detention Center where he was being held Monday without bond.
