Greenville, N.C. — An East Carolina University student has been charged in a November wreck that killed two fellow sorority sisters, Greenville police announced Friday.
Kamil Shaunay Arrington, 21, of Nashville, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle. She was given a $1,000 unsecured bond.
Victoria T'nya-Ann Carter, 20, of Raleigh, and Briana Latrice Gather, 20, of Kernersville, died of injuries sustained in the wreck shortly before dawn on Nov. 20. A third passenger, Taylor Nicole King, 19, of Greenville, was injured.
Police said the three women were in a car driven by Arrington that ran off the road and hit a tree at Greenville Boulevard and Rosewood Drive. Alcohol did not play a role in the wreck, police said.
All four women were members of the pledge class for Delta Sigma Theta at ECU, WNCT News in Greenville reports. Carter also was a member of the school's Black Student Union.
They were going to get their hair done for a pledge event that night, ECU officials told WNCT.
Carter's father told WNCT that police said Arrington fell asleep for a brief moment, just long enough for her foot to rest on the gas pedal and cause the car to accelerate.
