A bystander to a fight outside his house in Zebulon late Thursday was struck in the head with a bullet, Police Chief Timothy Hayworth said.

Hayworth said witnesses stated that Alonza Jamal Hunter, 21, got into an altercation with a person, then pulled out a gun and started firing outside 712 Shepard School Road around 11:20 p.m.

One round struck Jonathan Trevon Smith, 19, who was sitting in a parked car, the police chief said. He was taken to a local medical center, where he was undergoing emergency care early Friday.

Smith was not the intended target, Hayworth said.

Hunter, of 6470 Winters Road in Middlesex, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, shooting into an occupied vehicle and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He has not yet appeared before a magistrate.

Hayworth said that the investigation was ongoing, and more charges might be filed.

Its sad to say that he past away, RIP! When will these young man learn that a bullet has no name on it.

We must accept him as he is and don't make any judgements about him. We must not hurt his feelings. as400_guru... Now that was funny! : )

Can we please just hang ppl like this and be done with it? No need for them to spend years in prison watching tv in the ac/heat... finish them now.. he knew better, and should have to pay the ultimate price for it. I would go and watch the hangings of ppl like this.

Give this man 30 years. He deserves it and no early parole either.

The courts should get him a hair-cut off. Then he will be clean cut when he enters prison.
