Greenville, N.C. — Detectives said they believe that a Greenville man shot and killed his 55-year-old father in an apartment near East Carolina University last weekend.
Police said Thursday that Kevin Richard Kleber misled them about the circumstances surrounding the death of his father, Roy Erwin Kleber.
Officers found Roy Kleber dead of a gunshot wound at his son's apartment, at 1112 E. 10 St., shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday. Neighbors told WCNT News that Roy Kleber was helping his son, a recent ECU graduate, move to a new job in Florida.
Police said that Kevin Kleber claimed that he saw three strangers in the parking lot around 5:30 a.m. and that one of those men entered his apartment uninvited. He said that an altercation ensued in which his father was fatally shot, police said. At one point, police released a composite sketch of a possible suspect.
Detectives, though, determined that the father and son were the only ones in the apartment and that Kevin Kleber fired the shot that killed his father, police said.
Kevin Kleber was charged with felony obstruction of justice. He has been released under a $50,000 unsecured bond. WNCT reported that he is now in Raleigh.
Police said that additional charges are possible amid the ongoing investigation.
