ZEBULON, N.C. — A Zebulon man was struck and killed early Monday while walking along N.C. Highway 97, Zebulon Police Chief Timothy Hayworth said.

Ronnie Edwards, 61, of Annie Joe Lane, was hit at about 5:15 a.m. west of a Burger King on the highway, but the incident wasn't reported until about 30 minutes later, Hayworth said.

Donald Bridges, 50, of 617 Devon Place in Zebulon, was in custody and was expected to be charged with felony hit and run, Hayworth said.

Bridges left the scene of the accident in his Dodge Durango and returned a short time later in another vehicle, Hayworth said. He then went to a nearby gas station to call 911.

A caller told a dispatcher in a 911 call released Tuesday afternoon that he was driving to a nearby teller machine when he saw a man lying at the edge of the road.

"I don't know if he's been hit or what because I didn't stop and look at him," the caller said.

There was no indication that speed or alcohol were factors in the incident, Hayworth said.
