RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh man faces a misdemeanor child abuse charge after police found a child sitting on top of a loaded handgun in his home.

Alan Errol Atwater Jr., 25, of 3062 Morgans Mill Court, was also arrested Sunday on a number of gun and drug charges, according to arrest warrants.

Police say Atwater had a loaded 9 mm handgun under a couch cushion where his girlfriend’s child was sitting when officers went to the home on Sunday.

Police seized marijuana from the house and a stolen handgun, according to the warrants.

According to state Department of Correction records, Atwater was convicted in Alamance County in 2005 on misdemeanor drug charges, as well as misdemeanor charges of resisting an officer and carrying a concealed weapon.

He was in the Wake County jail Monday morning under a $28,000 bond.
