Franklinton, N.C. — Franklinton police have made more arrests in connection with the shooting death of a 27-year-old man whose car crashed into a gas pump, setting off a fireball.
Police say that Jesse Montague Jr., 27, was shot in the back while driving along Sterling Street on Sept. 21. His car then crashed into a pump at a nearby Exxon gas station, sparking an explosion and a 10-foot fireball.
Investigators say that Rodrick Taborn, 27, of 323 S. Main St., went to help Montague after the wreck but stole his cell phone, wallet and some clothes. Montague's family found out about the theft, and Taborn returned the items to the family, investigators said.
Taborn was charged with larceny from person.
Investigators also accused a man and woman with helping the homicide suspect, Rashawn "May May" Arrington, 23, flee from police. He was arrested during a traffic stop in Southampton County, Virginia, a day after the slaying.
Investigators say that his sister, Jessica Arrington, 22, was driving the vehicle and that Jason Lamont Ruffin, 25, was a passenger.
Jessica Arrington, of 15 Whitaker St., and Ruffin, of 203 Bullock St., were both charged with accessory after the fact of a felony. Ruffin was being held in the Franklin County jail under a $25,000 bond.
Jessica Arrington was released after meeting a $30,000 bond.
