DURHAM, N.C. — The former boyfriend of Crystal Mangum, the Durham woman who falsely accused three Duke University lacrosse players of rape in 2006, said Monday that he's responsible for a February incident that led to criminal charges against her.

Mangum was charged Feb. 18 with attempted first-degree murder, five counts of arson, assault and battery, communicating threats, three counts of misdemeanor child abuse, injury to personal property, identity theft and resisting a public officer.

Durham police said she assaulted her boyfriend, Milton Walker, threatened to stab him and set some clothes on fire.

Mangum has claimed that the pair had an argument and that he hit her, prompting one of her three children to call 911.

Walker said he was off his medication when he got into a fight with Mangum and was acting out on voices he was hearing. He said he's responsible for the burned clothes and damage to the home.

He and a member of a group called Friends of Crystal Mangum tried to meet Monday with Durham County prosecutors.
