UNC system to let students opt out of abortion coverage
UNC President Erskine Bowles instructed the health insurance carrier for thousands of students to give them the option of not having abortion coverage in their policies.

The UNC system this fall is requiring all students on its 16 university campuses to prove they have health coverage, and they can either use their parents' policies, a personal policy or a UNC-sponsored plan. The sponsored plan included an elective coverage for abortions, which sparked the ire of a group called Students for Life of America.
The organization complained that tax money was being used to fund abortions because the cost of the UNC-sponsored insurance could be factored into how much federal financial aid students could receive.
UNC officials said the abortion coverage had no impact in setting premiums for the sponsored insurance plan.
