NCCU: Former student never disclosed sex offender status

print friendly

North Carolina Central University officials said Monday that a former student who was charged last week with a sex crime involving a current student didn't reveal he was a convicted sex offender on his enrollment application.

Brandon Alexander Whitehurst, 21, no address available, was charged on July 13 with sexual battery and a probation violation.

An N.C. Central student told campus police that Whitehurst tried to force his way into her dorm room last week.

Whitehurst was convicted in July 2006 of incest and had to register as a sex offender.

He attended N.C. Central in the 2008-09 school year and the fall 2009 semester but didn't enroll after that, school officials said Monday.

The university never conducted a background check on him because he didn't state on his enrollment application that he had a criminal record or that he was a registered sex offender.

"I am glad that these things don't happen at local HWCU." -Lickad

we all know that things like this do happen at HWCU but the stories/crimes are not plastered in the news because no one makes a big deal or fills up the blog posts, until it happens at an HBCU or a person of color has been charged with a crime. "smh"

Lickad said "I am glad that these things don't happen at local HWCU. As far as HBCU, I think if criminal records were checked, it would lower attendance. Hey, even Mangum went to NCCU".

In the past, HBCU didn't check criminal records but majority of HBCU do now. This was an incident where this guy slipped through the cracks.

wow...so racist their is no such thing as an HWCU...and they do run records at some HBCU's for your information and every black college student does not have a record....if you read more media maybe you would figure out that every school deals with situations such as this...

Registering these criminals is a joke. Most don't update it when they move. Also, depending on institutions to keep your family safe is a joke if it requires effort or money. And people like "Larky74406" are likely to be victims because they assume Cary and other places don't have criminals. People unable or unwilling to control themselves are everywhere. As long as our justice system worries more about the rights of criminals than the rights of victims, this will only get worse.
