Authorities have arrested one suspect and are searching for another in a domestic dispute that escalated into a shooting outside Roanoke Rapids early Saturday.

Justin David Luce, 22, of Roanoke Rapids, surrendered to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office Wednesday morning to face charges in connection with the shooting of Nathan Brooks Twisdale, 27, of Roanoke Rapids.

Investigator J.A. Merritt said that Twisdale broke into the Quiet Circle house of an ex-girlfriend who had gotten a protective order against him. Twisdale found her in a bedroom with Luce and got into an argument.

The woman was trying to get Twisdale to leave when Luce grabbed a "strategically placed" handgun and fired twice at the other man, Merritt said in a statement.

Luce fled the scene on foot.

Twisdale was struck once in the left hip. He was treated and released from Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Luce faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He was given a $30,000 bond and scheduled to appear in court next Wednesday.

Twisdale is wanted on charges of breaking and entering, domestic criminal trespass and violating a domestic protective order. He has previous convictions for selling drugs and drug possession, according to the state Department of Corrections.

Anyone with information on Twisdale's whereabouts should call the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office at 252-583-8201 or Halifax County Crime Stoppers at 252-583-4444.

it does not sound like he should have been charged at all based on the facts stated in the story. The Grand Jury will not find a true bill on this one or the DA will dismiss before it goes that far

I agree! The woman had a protective order against the man for petes sake. He shouldnt have never broke into the home.

Luce grabbed a "strategically placed" handgun

What does that mean? If my partner had a crazy violent ex, I would probably have a "strategically placed" handgun too. And they arrest the guy trying to protect himself and her from a crazy stalker that broke in even w/ a protective order in place? That is ludicrous! They should give him an award.

okay he shot an intruder that his girlfriend had a restraining order against so why is he in jail?
