Wounded Granville homeowner kills intruder

e-mail print friendly

A Granville County homeowner exchanged gunfire with a suspected burglar early Tuesday, killing the intruder, authorities said.

Sheriff Brindle Wilkins said Clay Ellington was trying to break into a home on Dove Road, near Creedmoor, and fired shots at the homeowner, Richard Chapel. Chapel returned fire, killing Ellington, the sheriff said.

Chapel was wounded in the exchange and was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment. His condition was unknown Tuesday afternoon.

The case remains under investigation.

Vetsister, please. I'm supposed to feel sympathetic toward him because he was a father? He had no consideration that the homeowner (who was shot at FIRST) might have been a father, brother or loved by many. That last name has been heard quite a few times around the Granville County courthouse. I do feel sorry for the victim's kid who is going to have to spend his life knowing his dad was willing to kill someone so he could steal his stuff.

with you jack

29 year old man with a weapon breaks into someone's home when he knows they are there...good thing homeowner had a weapon and protected his family from what could have really been a tragedy. Come on people..

I know both familes and they are good people. Clay had problems and what he did was not right by no means. He has a good mother and father and I know that they are hurting. Richard is a strong person and I know he will be fine and he done what he had to do to protect his family and I dont blame him at all I would have done the same thing.

Everyone needs to be considerate. There is nothing good or to be applauded for taking a life. What the deceased did was wrong, but he was a father, a son, a brother, and loved by many. His family is hurting and that is nothing to cheer about. I wish the homeowner a speedy recovery and ask that you pray for everyone involved in this tragic situation.
