RALEIGH, N.C. — Water shot more than 20 feet into the air Tuesday morning because of a broken valve under Garner Road in Raleigh, officials said.

The air-release valve on the water main broke at about 9:45 a.m. near the intersection with Cross Link Road, officials said. Police had to block the area to traffic while crews repaired the damage.

Andy Brogden, water distribution superintendent for the municipal water system, said the water was capped by 10:15 a.m., and the valve was replaced about a half-hour later. Two customers were affected by the break for about 10 minutes, he said.
