Durham woman sentenced for tax evasion

A Durham woman received a six-month prison sentence Wednesday after pleading guilty to not paying federal taxes on nearly $600,000.

Cheryl Meliones was also fined $4,000 and will be placed on probation for 18 months following her imprisonment. She was sentenced in federal court in Greensboro.

An investigation by the Internal Revenue Service's Criminal Investigation Division lead to charges against Meliones in October that she didn't file a federal income tax return in 2004, 2005 and 2006. She pleaded guilty to failing to file a return for $596,100 in 2006.

"It is important that honest, taxpaying citizens know that IRS-CI is working diligently to ensure they are not bearing the burden of someone else's tax liability," Special Agent-in-Charge Jeannine A. Hammett said. "IRS-CI will aggressively pursue those who willfully fail to file their tax returns."

Tell it seankelly15 - they had a blue light bandit that tried to stop a lady in Fayetteville; that's Obama's fault also. LOL

"On the subject of the Obama economy, I closed my business down last month after 7 profitable years under Bush. So, what does that prove? beef"

Sorry to hear that. By any chance your business is construction related?? I started my own business right after the last recession (2002). It has been profitable even though the last 1 & 1/2 years has dropped. Had to make a couple changes but it is not that bad. The key is that I made changes to survive but I don't try to make excuse. I'm the only one that is responsible for my own business whether it makes it or not.

When people aren't spending money; there is no different marketing plan as far as our business was concerned and my husband is at the age now where he can't compete in todays job market; not at his age and growing health concerns. Things are looking up for us now and people are at least spending money again and our doors can stay open awhile longer. Some people did well under Bush/Cheney but our business didn't and we lost a large portion of our investments when the economy tanked. The POTUS hasn't been in office long enough to correct all the wrong that's been done nor can he be blamed for it either. He has nothing to do with topic of discussion "Durham woman sentenced for tax evasion".

That you needed a different marketing plan for at least some of that time. Sorry it happened though - and I hope you are able to restart and sustain.

beef - ANY person who believes that they have entered the wrong income for a previous tax year can file an amended return (I have filed amended 1040s for a year where I failed to enter a 1099 as well as cases where I had overstated the income from some rental property). This lady filed NO TAX returns for five years. Big difference. But, not to you; you want to find some way to bash Obama. They found a body on NCSU's campus yesterday... I am sure that was Obama's fault as well.
