N.C. Highway Patrol takes action to improve image

print friendly

Following a series of scandals, the state Highway Patrol is taking action to improve its image.

Highway Patrol Commander Col. Randy Glover sent a memo to troopers recently saying members who embarrass the organization will be dealt with.

A number of troopers have been demoted or fired in the past three years for offenses including drunken driving, profiling young women for traffic stops, having sex on duty and animal abuse.

In the memo, Glover warned that postings on Facebook and YouTube that are inappropriate will not be tolerated.

anitov...agree with u 100%....but the top brass doesn't need to act all nice and shiney when there is dirt underneath...that's all i'm saying and that is where my real problem lies...i am the WIFE of a LEO

It will be difficult if not impossible to have an over night image change. The DUI's and animal abuse were committed by what, less than 1% of all the Troopers? When a Trooper does get a DUI I have no problem whatsoever with firing them. But that is where the spotlight will be shined. How many golo'ers heard about the Trooper that delivered a death message to a grandmother about her daughter and then gave her his frequent flier miles so she could go to the funeral in another state? Or the Trooper that donates a kidney, bet no one saw that one on wral.com did they? Those that screw up deserve what they have coming, but don't blame the Trooper in New Bern for what a Trooper in Asheville did.

again, jsessoms, i agree with you....but the hp really doesn't want ALL of its dirty laundry aired...just a little bit here and a little there...fire just enough to make the citizens of NC feel like they are really cracking down...release a memo stating what all of the troopers alreay know...as I said before, until they get rid of the "do as I say, not as I do or have done" attitude, nothing will change...i do believe we as taxpayers should expect these rules in ALL state agencies, not just NCSHP

I too do not understand why this is not on the front page. I believe that this issue along that needs to heard. Obviously, it is a problem (most likely there is alot more that needs to be heard) or it would have never been in the news to begin with.

I was wondering why this was taken off the front page.....
