KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — For at least the fourth time in the past year, a motorist drove off the end of Interstate 540 where the road meets U.S. Highway 64 Bypass in Knightdale.

The driver of a Dollar General truck said he crashed into trees at the bottom of the embankment at about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday after trying to avoid another driver going the wrong way, according to authorities.

State Department of Transportation officials said they will meet Wednesday to talk about the signage near the end of I-540 and whether it needs to be changed.

DOT officials said they came out after a May 7 crash in which a Raleigh man was seriously injured when he drove off I-540 and was thrown from his vehicle when it went down the embankment.

At the time, Police Chief Shawn Brown said local officials planned to work with the state DOT to ensure similar wrecks didn't occur in the future.
