ENFIELD, N.C. — Two people were killed in a wreck that shut down Interstate 95 South in Halifax County for nearly three hours Sunday morning.

State troopers said that a Mercury Mountaineer ran off the side of Interstate 95 North at mile marker 154, near Enfield, around 7 a.m. The driver, Nicole Fagan, 36, of Norwalk, Conn., over-corrected, and the SUV flipped over the median and landed in the southbound lane, troopers said.

Fagan was killed, and front-seat passenger Marvin Perkins, 36, also of Norwalk, died while being flown by helicopter to Pitt Memorial Hospital, troopers said.

Back-seat passenger Ron Dorsey, 36, of New Jersey, was flown by helicopter to Pitt Memorial Hospital. He was in critical condition Monday.

Fagan and Perkins' 3-year-old child was in the back seat of the vehicle.  He suffered minor injuries and was released into the custody of his grandfather, Joseph Fagan.

The four had visited the grandfather at his Wake Forest home and were traveling back to Connecticut when the crash happened.

State troopers said they do not know why the SUV ran off the road initially, but they believe the driver was speeding.

All southbound lanes and one northbound lane were closed while crews cleared the scene. Southbound traffic was detoured from the interstate. Traffic sensors showed that at one point, congestion stretched for about 12 miles.

The interstate was reopened around 10:30 a.m.
