Community colleges finalize admission plan for illegal immigrants

The State Board of Community Colleges on Friday gave final approval to a policy to admit illegal immigrants at North Carolina's 58 two-year colleges.

The board in September initially approved the policy to allow illegal immigrants to enroll if they graduated from a U.S. high school and paid out-of-state rates of about $7,000 a year. Under the policy, lawful U.S. residents would have priority to crowded classrooms.

The policy still must go through the state Rules Review Commission, and if the commission receives at least 10 objections to it, the issue would be referred to state lawmakers.

The General Assembly could pass a law to block the policy from taking effect, but if lawmakers take no action on it, the policy would go into effect.

rbh330, I hope you don't have kids.

If you are not LEGAL, then you are ILLEGAL. ILLEGAL means it's against a law. It doesn't matter whether there is a punishment for it or not, but it doesn't mean it's legal.

"That is just until the government makes them citizens, without having to do anything which should make the legals that have come here and jumped through all the hoops to become citizens really angry."

You're right it does, I met my husband 12 years ago while he was on business in the UK. 12 years later and a few thousand dollars poorer I'm a citizen. Hell I should have just slipped into the country as an illegal and saved the money.

Do it the right way and get screwed.

Congrats...maybe it will be the start of reform thats long waited for. Too bad they didn't have this before my husband graduated from UNC. We sure would have saved alot of money between college transfers. For once, I can proudly agree with something of this debate!!!! So for all the one's who disagree it doesn't affect you, you do only pay around 1500 or less if you receive pell, so I guess its a balance right?

erivera11 -

NOTHING in anything I've said is about hate or about race. It's interesting that you jumped to that conclusion first though.

I didn't specifically mention Hispanics - that was YOUR ASSUMPTION. Illegals come from all sorts of countries, not just Mexico. Though I'm sure our state has attracted a higher average of Hispanics than other minorities because of how close we are to that end of the country.

As for the scholarship thing, it's true that it's not my decision to make directly. HOWEVER, that grant money they'll get will come from MY GOVERNMENT spending MY TAX DOLLARS. Since I AM a community college student it directly effects my education. I've been paying my own way with no help from anyone for some time now. I also work full-time to support my "education habit".

ILLEGALS WILL BE GIVEN 1st priority - no matter what any administration; Federal, State, or Ed. Dept. says - because they're "minority students" and will be paying with the HIGHER student fee r

Under Title 8 Section 1325 of the U.S. Code, "Improper Entry by Alien," any citizen of any country other than the United States who:

* Enters or attempts to enter the United States at any time or place other than as designated by immigration officers; or * Eludes examination or inspection by immigration officers; or * Attempts to enter or obtains entry to the United States by a willfully false or misleading representation or the willful concealment of a material fact;

has committed a federal crime.

Violations are punishable by criminal fines and imprisonment for up to six months. Repeat offenses can bring up to two years in prison. Additional civil fines may be imposed at the discretion of immigration judges, but civil fines do not negate the criminal sanctions or nature of the offense.
