A man who wrecked his car Tuesday afternoon off Interstate 540 near Knightdale committed suicide, police said Wednesday.

The car went down an embankment into some woods near where I-540 ends at U.S. Highway 264. The car crashed through a barrier, went airborne and landed in some trees.

After the wreck, the driver of the car hanged himself in the woods, police said.

The driver was a 26-year-old man from Raleigh. His name was withheld Wednesday, pending notification of relatives.

The incident remains under investigation.
