Traffic delays reported after I-85 crash in Mebane

Two people died in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 85/40 near Mebane Oaks Road at about 8 a.m. Tuesday, according to the state Highway Patrol.

A Honda Civic was westbound on the highway when it either stopped or stalled in the second lane from the left-hand shoulder, the Highway Patrol said. A Ford Explorer then rear-ended the Civic.

Two people were killed, but it wasn't immediately clear if they were both among the four occupants of the Civic or if the driver of the Explorer was one of the victims.

The other three people involved in the wreck were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their conditions were unknown Tuesday afternoon.

The names of the victims hadn't been released as of Tuesday afternoon.

Have to agree with jafarmg2. The whole point of keeping a safe following distance is so you can avoid unexpected hazards. It won't be 100% perfect, but if you keep a safe/sufficient distance between you and the car in front of you then you should generally be able to avoid hitting them, even if they do come to a sudden and complete stop and you're traveling at 70 mph. As speed increases, so should the space in front of you.

"Thats my exit. God is good! I pray everyone is ok."

Obviously that statement is way out of line. If your god was so good then why are these people now dead?

Probably for the same reason there so many Haitians dead from the earthquake.....No gods nor angels have shown up to help them yet either, and will never show up.

I-40/85 from the merge west of Durham to the split east of Greensboro is extremely dangerous.

Most drivers are exceeding the 65 mph speed limit.

If I was a State Trooper, I would spend the day in that stretch. It would be so easy to achieve the ticket writing quota.

70 MPH=106 Ft per second

Very easy to ram into a stalled or stopped car.

Wonder if the driver had hazard lights on?

jenakids2007 is absolutely right ... that looks to be much closer to the 119 exit than the Mebane Oaks Road exit. Tragic.
