Attorneys for the man accused of opening fire in a Moore County nursing home and killing eight people last March asked a judge Thursday to move his trial.

The defense is seeking a change of venue for Robert Kenneth Stewart, who faces the death penalty for the March 29 rampage at Pine Lake Health and Rehab in Carthage.

Stewart, 45, is charged with killing seven residents and a nurse at the home. Authorities have not offered a motive for the slayings, but Stewart's estranged wife, Wanda Stewart, a Pinelake employee working that morning, said she believed Stewart was looking for her.

A hearing on the motion is scheduled for May 10.
