Granville County prosecutors filed notice Jan. 12 that they plan to seek the death penalty against a man accused of killing his wife.

William Scott Morris, 35, of 113 W. Church St. in Creedmoor, was charged in November with first-degree murder and fraudulently burning a dwelling.

His wife, Kelly Morris, was last seen Sept. 3, 2008. The following day, the house she shared with her family at 3220 Tump Wilkins Road caught fire, which officials ruled was arson. Hours afterward, authorities found Morris' car about a mile from her home with her keys, purse and cell phone inside.

Authorities found the skeletal remains of Kelly Morris, 28, Nov. 17 and charged her husband on the same day.

A Rule 24 hearing was scheduled for Jan. 27. At that time, District Attorney Sam Currin will present the case for the death penalty.

Sam Currin? Any relation to victim's family?

I do not think there is any relation, or he would not be working this case.

I am glad to see some justice is done. Granville county seems to have a lot more crime these days, and what was once a place I felt safe to live, is no longer. I can't wait to see how this ends.

I'm torn between whether I think him getting the death penalty, so that he can just get it over with and not have to live with the consequences of his actions, or just giving him life in prison without parole. He should suffer, and prison seems like a wonderful place for him to do so. I hope he drops the soap numerous times! Kelly was such a wonderful and fun person to be around.

Wow! No presumed innocent until proven guilty here at all. Sounds like this guy has no hope of an unbiased jury pool. Sam Currin? Any relation to victim's family?

Yes, it is sad - on so many levels! But the root of the sadness is Scott Morris. I don't know Scott and I didn't know Kelly, either, or their family or friends. The death penalty is supposed to work as a deterrent so others won't commit crimes this egregious. It's just unfortunate that we can't do to him what he did to Kelly. But there's a moratorium on the death penalty right now in NC anyhow, so even if he's convicted and sentenced to death, we'll have to wait until that's overwith before they give him the needle.
