Durham officer injured in chase

A Durham police officer suffered minor injuries Thursday afternoon while trying to halt a pickup that was fleeing a traffic stop, police said.

Officer R.L. Green pulled a 1996 Chevrolet pickup over on Guess Road near Interstate 85 at about 12:45 p.m., and the pickup sped off as he approached the truck. The pickup hit a Toyota Camry on the entrance ramp to southbound I-85, police said.

The pickup exited the highway on Hillandale Road, ran a red light and collided with a northbound 1999 Dodge work van driven by Matthew Furtick, 36, of Durham, police said. The van then hit a northbound 2001 Toyota Tacoma in the next lane before rolling onto the median and over the hood of a southbound Durham police car driven by Officer B.T. Francis.

The pickup then came to a stop on Hillandale Road, and its driver, Christopher R. Cyr, 20, of Galax Drive in Raleigh, was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment of head injuries.

The driver of the Tacoma, David Donovan, 63, of Burlington, was also taken to Duke. Furtick and Francis were treated for minor injuries.

Cyr faces charges of felony hit-and-run, felony fleeing to elude officers, careless and reckless driving, running a red light, driving without a license and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Hillandale Road north of I-85 was closed for more than two hours Thursday afternoon as police investigated the case and removed the vehicles from the scene.

I have never understood why someone tries to out run the Police or Highway Patrol. It just makes things worse. This is another prime example of having no respect for human life. I just hope the policeman and others that were involed were not seriously injured.
