FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Cumberland County investigators said Thursday that they have charged four people with putting explosive devices in a mailbox and a local yard.

Ryan Colby Pierpont, 18, of 5303 Old Railroad Way in Hope Mills, Guy Gregory Pugh Jr., 18, of 3015 Paddlefish Road in Fayetteville, Clayton Christopher Pierce, 19, and Clinton Harry Pierce, 17, both of 703 Connaly Drive in Hope Mills, were each charged with one count of malicious use of an explosive device and two counts of felony conspiracy.

Investigators said the four tried to put a plastic bottle filled with a flammable liquid in the mailbox of a home at 3910 Constance Road on Nov. 29, but they wound up throwing the bottle on the front yard of the home because it was too big to fit in the box. The bottle exploded in the yard.

The four returned to the house a month later and placed a liquid-filled bottle in the mailbox, which exploded, authorities said.

Investigators say additional charges are pending in other jurisdictions in regards to similar crimes.
