The embattled administrator of the New Hanover County Alcohol Beverage Control board will retire next month, County Manager Bruce Shell said Tuesday.

Billy Williams, who has been with the board for more than 40 years and is the highest-paid ABC administrator in the state at a salary of $232,000 in the 2009-10 fiscal year, told the board about his intentions to step down last year, board member Stephen Culbreth said.

The paperwork for a retirement takes awhile to process, Shell said, explaining that he got Williams’ letter on Tuesday.

Williams and his son, Bradley Williams, both serve on the New Hanover board. The pair has been under scrutiny for the level of their pay and bonuses. In 2009-10, Bradley Williams collected a base salary of $115,500. Both men got five-figure bonuses in each of the past four years, documents show.

the mafias are not even that daring!

pfft.

The bonuses were more than many folk's yearly income.......

And Uncle Sam pats them on the back, and says Do it again!!!!! Do it again!!

Hope several folks from the 'fancy' dinner had desingated drivers!

"So what else is new with STATE EMPLOYEES"

Ahh, so teachers, cops, etc MUST be in on it too right? Come on!

"My bet is ALL of these ABC board members, commissioners, RIDICULOUSLY PAID positions are Democratic Party supporters and these outrageous salaries funded by kind and generoud NC"

That's just too funny on it's own, I don't need to add anything!

I don't know the party of the NHC ABC Board members, but they were appointed by the NH County Commissioners, which I believe is currently 4-1 Republican majority. Hard to blame this on Bev or on just the Dems. The issues with these local fiefdoms involves members of both parties.

Most of the other "facts" posted about private vs public, how it is better up North, laws affecting ABC boards and employees, disposition of profits, and most everything else -- they are wrong, misleading, misinformed, and generally clueless. Normal GOLO.
